5 key areas to focus if you want your resume to stand out in 2020

Resume is an individual's first introduction to a recruiter or a hiring manager. It helps an individual create that first impression to get shortlisted for the next round of interview. The reason why most individuals fail to get shortlisted for an interview even after having the requisite skills is an unstructured resume.

From among a big bunch of resumes, if you want the recruiter to shortlist yours, you need to pay close attention to the details. Most career aspirants believe that the question here is, "What information do you present in your resume ?". But with present times where skilled professionals are amply available in the job market, it's time to answer the big question, "How do you present information in your resume ?"

Based on our experience in hiring professionals, we have come up with a list of small secrets that one needs to wary off when drafting a resume.

Simple, Crisp and Precise

That is the true mantra when it comes to highlighting your key skills or describing your work experience. When it is about going through a large number of resumes, no one cares to read paragraphs. Rather, a resume with simple, crisp and precise bullet points with sentences not more than 10 words are highly appreciated and noticed by recruiters.

Highlight your Relevant Experience

It is often noted that individuals have experience in diverse domains and technologies. When it comes to applying for a specific job role, it is always advised to go through the job description and modify your resume to highlight your skills and expertise in areas related to the same. This draws the recruiter's attention and gives him the right picture of your experience.

Update your Contact Information

The mandatory yet critical part of your resume which provides the recruiter a chance to explore you further. The contact information area must contain your mobile number, email address, linkedIn ID and website(if any). It is always good to specify your current location in terms of the city and country, rather than the entire address.

Highlight your relevant Educational areas

A civil engineer applying for a developer role sounds really weird. But the facts speak differently. Majority of engineers who work in IT firms and non-IT students. So, if you are applying to a role that is different from your educational qualification, it is always good to highlight the areas studied as part of a subject/certification/training/internship that is relevant. This gives a boost to your rationale behind applying for the position.

Prioritize your Skills

Current market demands T-shaped, pi-shaped and comb shaped professionals. Today's individuals possess multiple skills in multiple domains. But when it comes to specifying the same in your resume, you must first categorise skills into 3 buckets - primary, secondary and generic skills.

Primary skills must be the domain/technology that you are expert in. eg. Core Banking, Automation, RPA, Machine Learning etc.

Secondary skills contain the expertise in the tools/areas that are aiding your primary skills. eg. Selenium, Flexcube, SAP Banking etc.

Generic skills are the ones which are used in all fields/areas like MS Office package.

While specifying the same, the order must be primary >> secondary >> generic (only if the space permits.)
